The University of Advanced Technology (UAT) in Tempe, Arizona is a private, for-profit university that has been at the forefront of integrating technology into its general education requirements since its founding in 1983. With an enrollment of approximately 1,000 students, UAT offers associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees both on campus and online. In 1992, CAD Institute founded an initial research center, the Computer Reality Center, which mainly conducted research for the computer graphics industry with a specific emphasis on the field of virtual reality. The institution moved to a new accrediting agency, the Accreditation Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS), which certified it as a university in 1996. That same year, the institute began offering educational programs outside the CAD approach. To reflect the expanded technological focus of students within the institution, the name CAD was retired in 1997 and the institution was renamed the University of Advanced Computer Technology (UACT). Coupled with program and student growth, UACT designed and built a 50,000 square foot (4,600 m) technology-oriented campus in 1998 in Tempe, Arizona.
The building has classrooms, computer laboratories and common computing areas equipped with approximately 300 computer workstations and extensive technological infrastructure. In 2000, UAT received approval to offer online courses. To recognize that computer technology had evolved beyond the personal computer to encompass all devices that communicate, manage information and provide connections through all media, including the Internet, UACT was renamed the University of Advanced Technology (UAT) in 2002. In 2003, UAT offered its first online degree in game design. Today, UAT offers associate's, bachelor's and master's degree programs with 20 different undergraduate specializations and 5 areas of study at the graduate level with a focus on technological innovation, video game design and programming, digital media, robotics, cybersecurity and computer science. In recognition of the quality of its network security program, UAT was designated a Center for Academic Excellence by the National Centers for Information Security Education (CAEIAE) sponsored by the United States Department of Homeland Security. The network security curriculum is certified by the United States National Security Agency's Information Assurance Course Evaluation Program for (NSTISSI-401), National Training Standard for Information Systems Security Professionals (INFOSEC), CNSSI-4012, National Information Assurance Training Standard for System Administrators (NSTISSI-401), National Information Assurance Training Standard for System Security Officers (ISSSI-401), National Information Assurance Training Standard for System Security Officers (ISSSI-401) THEREFORE).The Center for Law, Science and Innovation at UAT is an established leader in addressing the extraordinary legal and regulatory issues brought about by rapid advances in science and technology.
Scholarship students and alumni play a critical role in LSI projects and have the opportunity to learn and work with interdisciplinary experts in their area of interest. Tempe promises to actively work to eliminate bias and prevent discrimination in the deployment of any AI technology according to a draft Tempe policy. The award was created in memory of Professor Daniel Strouse whose wisdom ingenuity and warmth improved the education of hundreds of students. A Tempe spokesperson said that while they have yet to implement any novel AI technology into their daily work they are actively working towards eliminating bias and preventing discrimination when it comes to deploying AI technology.
